<em>AutoWeek</em> has decided to let the cat get just a little bit further out of the bag this morning following last night's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/17/2011-ford-mustang-gt-to-offer-412-horsepower-5-0l-v8/">first bit of embargo breakage</a> regarding the 2011 Ford Mustang GT and its <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUkD4CY7YAQ">5.0-liter V8 engine</a>. So, by now you've heard that the new powerplant puts out 412 ponies, or 83 horsepower-per-liter. Now, AW wants you to know it also offers up 390 pound-feet of torque and that peak power comes at a screaming 6,500 RPM.<br />
<br />
The new powertrain combination will also return 25 miles per gallon, says AW. How does it manage this feat? With an aluminum engine block with cast cylinder sleeves and brand-new heads with four valves per cylinder, vertical intake ports and twin independent variable valve timing. Don't forget the tuned exhaust headers, a forged steel crankshaft with four-bolt main bearings plus new pistons and connecting rods.<br />

And what about the transmission? Your choice of either the 6R80 automatic transmission or the MT82 six-speed manual. We now return you to your regularly-scheduled programming... until the next bit of embargo breakage, of course.<br />

Over one million Sync-equipped vehicles have been sold in three years. The Blue Oval's exclusive deal with Microsoft ended last year and other Microsoft-powered in-car competitors will be arriving soon, so Ford has been busy working on new elements that it hopes will keep Sync in front of the challengers.<br /> <br /> Ford has updated Sync a couple of times this year with things like <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/31/ford-launches-new-free-app-for-2010-vehicles-with-sync/">traffic and directions</a>, and a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/13/ford-offers-desktop-app-to-download-phone-address-books-to-sync/">contacts download app</a>. According to <em>The Detroit News, </em>the next big update is scheduled to be announced at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ces">Consumer Electronics Show</a> in Las Vegas next month. Ford isn't giving away details, but it's called "mobile apps," and it will enable Sync functionality with any app on a cellphone or personal music player. That would likely mean <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/18/future-ford-sync-upgrade-could-include-pandora-streaming/">Pandora on-the-go</a> and Twitter out loud. <br /> <br /> It could also mean a price: rumors suggest that Ford will be charging for the upgrade, and that it will come on 2010 vehicles and be available to any previous Sync-fitted vehicle. If <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford">Ford</a> first introduced the GT90 Concept at the 2010 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/detroit-auto-show/">Detroit Auto Show</a> next month, we would probably consider it one of the coolest cars on the show floor. Incredibly, Ford unveiled the GT90 nearly 15 years ago. Even by today's standards it is a supercar of supercars. The quad-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 puts out an estimated 720 horsepower, the body is constructed completely of carbon fiber and top speed is somewhere in the 250 mph range. The only hints that it's not a modern supercar are the all-blue interior and wheels that are decidedly not from this decade.<br />
<br />
So why are we talking about the GT90 Concept now? RM Auctions has just announced that it will be offering the car at its Arizona sale. That's right, this is your chance to own one of the coolest concept vehicles of all time. This is the first time that the GT90 Concept has ever been publicly for sale at auction, and RM claims that it is in "excellent running condition, having been properly stored and maintained over the year." No estimated price is given, but we're guessing it will take a significant chunk of change to take the car home. <br /> According to the latest report from the Environmental Protection Agency, <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/category/ford/">Ford</a> has scored the biggest improvement in combined fuel economy of any major carmaker over the last five years. Between 2005 and 2009, Ford improved its fleet average by nearly 20 percent - almost twice as much as any other company. While Ford certainly made a lot of incremental improvements in the efficiency of its vehicles over that period, that wasn't the only factor.<br /> <br /> That same time period saw a huge shift in the model mix at Ford. Sales of SUVs like the Explorer and Expedition collapsed as consumers moved to crossovers like the Edge and Flex (oh, and we suppose a car or two). The Explorer has gone from more than 400,000 annual sales earlier this decade to just over 68,000 last year. <br /> <br /> Ford has made actual improvements, as well, however, including the introduction of the Escape Hybrid and the roll out of six-speed transmissions. The next five years should see even bigger gains as Ford deploys millions of <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/search/?q=EcoBoost">EcoBoost</a> engines, battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. <br /> Thanks to a loose-lipped Facebookian that couldn't help sharing insider information and a quick follow-up post from Inside Line, we can now confirm the return of the iconic 5.0-liter <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/mustang">Mustang GT</a> for 2011. Even better news is the fact that the Mustang GT's new mill will crank out an impressive 412 horsepower.<br /> <br /> By way of comparison, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/camaro">2010 Chevy Camaro</a> SS has a 6.2-liter V8 with as much as 422 horses when mated to a six-speed manual and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/challenger">2010 Dodge Challenger</a> SRT8 has a 6.1-liter Hemi that offers 425 ponies. And remember, both of those rivals are considerably heavier than the Mustang.<br /> <br /> As much as we'd like to unload more goods on the 2011 Mustang, you'll just have to wait until Ford's good and ready. While <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford</a> <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/18/ford-sells-20-of-its-stake-in-mazda/">sold most of its controlling stake in Mazda</a> last November, the two automakers will remain close partners as the companies work together to develop new automotive systems and technologies -- refuting previous <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/04/report-ford-and-mazda-may-develop-vehicles-separately-going-for/">reports that the two companies may be drifting apart</a>. The announcement comes from top executives at both Ford and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/mazda/">Mazda</a>, which have been meeting recently to discuss further collaborations within the industry.<br />

A strong relationship benefits both automakers. Ford needs Mazda for its insight into manufacturing, product development and its window into the Japanese auto industry. Mazda still relies on Ford for its powertrains (which Ford will continue to provide). The recently launched <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/fiesta">Ford Fiesta</a> and Mazda2, built on a shared platform, are another example of how the two automakers can work together. The cars were originally engineered for other markets and not intended for sale in the States. When Ford's product strategy changed while they were under development, the two companies met and solved the critical design elements together, making each viable for the domestic market. Problems solved, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/02/2011-ford-fiesta-at-2009-la-auto-show/">Fiesta</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/02/2011-mazda-mazda2-los-angeles-auto-show-2009-unveiled/">Mazda2</a> debuted at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/la-auto-show/">LA Auto Show</a> earlier this month and are going on sale next year.<br />

What about the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/edge">Edge</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/mkx">MKX</a>? This duo was launched years before the automaker's polarizing pair of three-row CUVs arrived. <br /> <br /> Well, their due for redesigns. Or at least, according to these spy shots, refreshenings of their front and rear ends. In the Edge's case, that means making the already handsome people mover look a bit more windswept, though it appears things will stay largely the same between the A- and D-pillars. <br /> <br /> The changes look more substantial for the MKX, which launched before Lincoln debuted its increasingly ubiquitous doubled-winged grille design. That punum looks pretty okay on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/mks">MKS</a> sedan and like a baleen whale on the oversized MKT. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/gallery/2010-ford-s-max/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" align="right" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/12/ford_s-max_bruss.jpg" alt="" /></a>The next generation models of Ford of Europe's popular Galaxy and S-Max people movers are about to make their introductions at the Brussels Motor Show. Both have been given modest exterior revamps, new technologies like Ford's Blind Spot Information System and so on. Most importantly, though, these are the first Fords to receive EcoBoost four-cylinder engines. <br />
<br />
The S-Max wears a redesigned hood and front fascia with LED running lights, while its rear end gets a new tailgate and LED taillights. The Galaxy is likewise fitted with the new family look, with a bolder lower, new fog lights, and LEDs in the rear. <br />
<br />
Both cars have updated interiors and new materials. Under their hoods, the 2.0-liter EcoBoost SCTi tops out at 200 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque (the latter of which is available from just 1,750 rpm). This time Vaughn Gittin, Jr. plays a support role to Hard Rock's illusionist Steve Wyrick, who pulls off a little sleight-of-car-and-body that channels Houdini and almost any Nicholas Cage stunt scene that has a car in it.<br />

Like the best tricks, it isn't long but will have you wondering how it was done. <br /> The National Automotive History Collection (NAHC) has named the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/flex">2010 Ford Flex</a> its most collectible vehicle of 2009, beating out seven other vehicles shortlisted for the award. The Flex is the 11th vehicle to receive the award, given by members overseeing the "world-famous" automotive collection at the Detroit Public Library. Members say the Flex won because it was the most likely vehicle to turn heads at the 2034 Woodward Dream Cruise.<br /> <br /> The Flex does have some interesting styling cues and the EcoBoost model is sold in relatively low volumes which could make it the Woody of its generation, but even still, we're not entirely sold on its collectibility. We're actually quite fond of the Flex but we just don't see anyone collecting Ford's boxy crossover any time soon (or in the future, either). For starters, this author hopes crossovers don't become collectibles. Something about a people hauler being put on display for all to see and admire seems wrong - just don't tell Chevrolet Nomad collectors.<br /> <br /> Then there is the fact that most of the early models that were named "Most Collectible" are now considered to be very average transportation at best and flat out junk at worst. For example, the Oldsmobile Aurora and the Buick Riviera were co-winners in 1995 followed by the Chrysler Sebring Convertible in 1996. Yuck. The award then went on hiatus until 2002 when the retro-riffic but short-lived Ford Thunderbird was predictably chosen. More recent winners have been a bit more respectable though, with the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/challenger">Dodge Challenger</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/viper">Viper</a> making the list along with the <a href="http://mustang">2005 Ford Mustang</a>. The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/300">Chrysler 300</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/solstice">Pontiac Solstice</a> have also made it to the podium. We get that this is a reward given out in Detroit with virtually no chance of a foreign nameplate ever winning, but we can think of plenty of domestics that seem more deserving. How about the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/zr1">Chevrolet Corvette ZR1</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/cts-v">Cadillac CTS-V</a> or <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/shelby+gt500">Shelby GT500</a>? Back in October, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford</a> anointed China's Geely Holding Group as its preferred bidder for Swedish Automaker <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/volvo/">Volvo</a>. The move made perfect sense for Ford, simply because Geely was offering money and the recent happenings in the auto industry proved that, beyond the shadow of a doubt, you can never have too much money. But it should come as a surprise of nobody that there is a significant delegation of past and present members of Volvo management that aren't all that thrilled with being engulfed by an up and coming Chinese company.<br />
<br />
Sweden news site <em>The Local</em> is reporting that eight former Volvo directors have collaborated on a letter to Ford Chairman Bill Ford Jr. asking the Blue Oval to reconsider a sale to Geely. The letter reportedly states that Geely doesn't have the technical competence to keep the Swedish automaker going. The letter also allegedly stated that Volvo is concerned about technical details being leaked to Geely -- a situation Ford likely wouldn't be too happy with. <br />
<br />
While past Volvo directors appear to be very concerned about the prospect of Geely taking over the company, current Volvo management is speaking out in favor of the deal. That's probably a good idea considering the real possibility that the Chinese automaker could soon be the masters of the current management's future with the safety-oriented automaker. Politicians are getting in on the debate as well, as democrats are reportedly likening ceding control of Volvo to Geely to selling the company to China and to Communism. <br />

Ron Gettelfinger, the United Auto Workers' (UAW) president during the recent tumult, is moving on from his post, and has thrown his support behind Bob King. King is currently a vice president in the union and manages the relationship with Ford. <br />
<br />
While the outlook is positive for King's nomination, he's going to have some reconciliation to do. In the last go-round with Ford, King asked his membership to agree to concessions that took strikes off the table, which the UAW's rank and file promptly denied. Despite the contention, King has been thought of as Ron Gettelfinger's replacement for some time, and the union hopes King will be a tougher customer in the throes of negotiation. <br />

SYNC, Ford's voice-operated in-vehicle phone and media player interface, has become hugely popular feature. Since its introduction a couple years back, Ford has added new features and functionality to the system, including the ability to call up turn-by-turn directions, even on cars without navigation.<br />
<br />
If you have a newer, more advanced phone that can download its address book, you can make calls by simply telling the car to call a given contact's name. If, on the other hand, you're stuck with a more prosaic communications device, you're limited to dialing by number. <br />
<br />
To address this limitation, Ford's has introduced SYNCmyPhone. This is a desktop application (available for Windows and Mac) that allows users to create and manage their address book. Once the address book is ready, it can then be saved to a USB drive and loaded to a SYNC-equipped car, giving it the dial-by-name functionality previously available only to users of newer phones. Word has it that <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford</a> CEO <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/AlanMulally/">Alan Mulally</a> and the new interim CEO of <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/gm/">General Motors</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/EdWhitacre/">Ed Whitacre</a>, had a phone conversation this week. This type of across-the-aisle conversation is not unusual, as Mulally himself placed a call to each of his competitors when he arrived in D-town from Boeing three years ago. <br />
<br />
We weren't on the call ourselves and neither CEO has divulged any details of their conversation, so we're left to just guess at what was said. Considering Mulally's success at Ford so far and the quagmire into which Whitacre is stepping at GM, we think it may have went something like this.<br />

The first quarter of 2009 could best be described as the worst of times in the auto industry. With the full weight of the global financial collapse weighing down on the industry, sales dropped like a stone and production screeched to a halt. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/gm/">General Motors</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford</a> produced only 371,000 and 349,000 vehicles respectively during Q1 2009, a mere fraction of the industry giants' overall capacity. One year later, the auto industry here in the U.S. is still far from healthy, but many industry experts feel the market has stabilized. <br />

Evidence of that fact presents itself when looking at production data for the fourth quarter of 2009 versus the first quarter of 2010. <em>Automotive News</em> is reporting that Ford plans to build 550,000 cars and trucks in the first quarter while GM plans 650,000 units. While that's a bump of 58 percent and 75 percent versus Q1 2009, respectively, the numbers are within a few thousand units of Q4 production. But even compared to Q4, production is up around four percent for both Ford and GM - a hopeful sign for the industry.<br />
<br />
But while GM and Ford appear to have good production news, AN is reporting that the forecast is a bit cloudier for <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/chrysler/">Chrysler</a>. The Pentastar's recent announcement that it would <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/07/chrysler-reportedly-set-to-extend-holiday-shutdown-at-five-plant/">prolong shutdown</a> over the holidays throws some doubt on the Auburn Hills, MI-based automaker's reported plan to increase Q1 2010 production by 56% versus Q1 2009. While Chrysler was supposed to up production to 376,000 units, the shutdown could drop production by up to 30,000 units.<br />

J.D. Power has released its 2009 Sales Satisfaction Index, and 29 of 38 brands improved their standing versus last year's numbers. The industry watchdogs at Power say that sales people improved the most over 2008, which isn't surprising given the fact that fewer vehicles are flying off dealer lots and every customer is a precious commodity. Even with the improved standing versus 2008, J.D. Power says that brands still lost 12% of sales on average due to poor service at the dealer level, a statistic that could have automakers cringing.<br />

<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/jaguar/">Jaguar</a> took top luxury honors for the second straight year with an 898 index score, beating second place <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/cadillac/">Cadillac</a> by a scant five points. J.D. Power says Jaguar excels in both salesperson interactions and the handling of the dreaded financing/paperwork. The top five rounds out with <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/lexus/">Lexus</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/mercedes-benz/">Mercedes Benz</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/land-rover/">Land Rover</a>. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/audi/">Audi</a> performed most poorly of any brand studied, while <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/infiniti/">Infiniti</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/volvo/">Volvo</a> also fared poorly.<br />

<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/mercury/">Mercury</a> was the top non-luxury make with a score of 867, followed by <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/smart/">Smart</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/buick/">Buick</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/pontiac/">Pontiac</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/chevrolet/">Chevrolet</a>. Mercury reportedly scored well on all five categories tested, though we're a bit puzzled how Mercury could beat <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/lincoln/">Lincoln</a> by four points in spite of the fact that the two makes usually share a common dealership. Japanese and Korean brand-dealers scored poorly in the survey as <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/honda/">Honda</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/toyota/">Toyota</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/nissan/">Nissan</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/kia/">Kia</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/mazda/">Mazda</a> all scored below the industry average of 832. <br />

<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/gm/">General Motors</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford</a> dealers fared very well in the survey, with all of their brands except Lincoln coming in over the industry average. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/chrysler/">Chrysler</a> brands, however, did not do as well, with all three makes falling under the industry Mendoza line. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/mitsubishi/">Mitsubishi</a> was by far the worst dealership to deal with, with an industry-low 778 index score. We're guessing you've heard about <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/toyota/">Toyota's</a> massive <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/25/breaking-toyota-to-recall-3-8m-vehicles-to-reshape-and-replace/">3.8 million vehicle recall</a> for unintended acceleration. It appears to be an issue that could have potentially resulted in several deaths and reports of hundreds of accidents. <em>Consumer Reports</em> wanted to dig deeper on the matter, studying National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data for the 2008 model year. <em>CR</em> chose 2008 because the claims occurred prior to the widespread media coverage that has resulted in a flood of new complaints. <br />
<br />
In studying NHTSA's accumulated 5,916 reports CR found that 166 involved unintended acceleration complaints. Of those, 128 were reported prior to August 28, 2009, when a California family was killed in a Lexus sedan experiencing uncontrollable acceleration. Of those 128 complaints, 47 came from Toyota and five from Lexus, representing 41 percent of overall unintended acceleration complaints. That's obviously a disproportionate amount of reports for an automaker with 16 percent of the US market's overall share. Here's one complaint logged by NHTSA.<br />

I had been on cruise control at about 73 mph... [A] passenger screamed at me to slow down. I was unable to do so, even after stepping forcefully on the brakes."</em></div>
</blockquote> While Toyota had a disproportionate amount of unintended acceleration claims, the Japanese automaker wasn't alone. Ford received an also high 36 overall complaints, or 28 percent of all U.S. models. The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/f-150">F-150</a> appears to have been one of the Blue Oval's main culprits, and complaints ranged from a gas pedal that was too wide to an engine that decided to go buck wild.<br />

</blockquote> While Toyota and Ford have the lion's share of unintended acceleration claims, other automakers have a disproportionately low amount of complaints. Chrysler came in with 11 complaints, GM had seven, Honda had five and Nissan had three. Good news, Ford fans: The Blue Oval will be adding remote start and heated steering wheels to its line of cars and trucks. The remote start option will make its first appearance on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/24/2011-ford-super-duty-debuts-at-texas-state-fair-with-two-new-eng/">2011 F-Series Super Duty</a> pickup truck while the heated tiller will initially be fitted to the 2011 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/mkx">Lincoln MKX</a>.<br />

Following those two launches, the automaker promises that both items will infiltrate the rest of its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford">Ford</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/lincoln">Lincoln</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/mercury">Mercury </a>lineups in a jiffy. While it's been possible to have an aftermarket remote start system installed on any new car or truck for quite some time (including a dealer-installed option from Ford), JD Power reports that 90 percent of all purchasers would prefer a factory option, which makes perfect sense to us, particularly since Ford's system will be integrated with the heating and cooling systems to bring the cabin to a comfortable temperature regardless of the weather outside.<br />
<br />
Ford predicts that the remote start system will help the vehicle's exhaust catalyst heat up more quickly, thereby reducing hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 75 percent. Further, the automaker suggests that a heated steering wheel will increase dexterity in the fingers and hands and reduce the need to wear gloves while driving in the winter. Want to know more?
